THE ULTIMATE KIT GUIDE TO SPRING YACHT SAILING

It’s finally spring, and sailing is becoming much more enjoyable now that you can think about more than just how cold you are. Sailing in spring has its perks such as racing starting up again, longer days, and plenty of bank holiday weekends to extend your time on the water. But, the weather can be so unpredictable. You could be waking up with frost, and then by mid-day the sun is out, it’s 15 degrees and it’s time to whip out the sunnies and suncream. Then, out of nowhere, you’ve got torrential rain showers. We’ve put together this guide to help you decide what to wear in the in-between weather.

Layering

Layering is the key to spring sailing. That’s because wearing lots of thinner layers instead of one big coat, means that you can take the layers off when it gets warmer and add more when it gets cooler. It’s a good idea to have a base layer, midlayer and outer waterproof layer when sailing in spring. That way you can mix and match them depending on the weather conditions.

Tristan, our sailing buyer, suggests going with a pair of waterproof shorts like the Zhik Elite shorts and combining them with base layer trousers like the Zhik Hydrobase trousers to add comfort and insulation for your legs. When it’s just too cold for shorts, a technical trouser like the Musto Evo trouser can also be combined with the base layer trouser to provide extra protection for your legs without making you overheat.

When it comes to your top half, you’re going to want to follow a similar layering method than your bottom half. Starting off, a good base layer like the Helly Hansen Lifa Crew Baselayer makes a huge difference on the colder spring days and saves wearing a midlayer when the sun comes out. For when it’s a bit chillier, a midlayer like the Helly Hansen Crew Hooded Midlayer Sailing Jacket is a lighter weight option then the big winter coat but still fully waterproof and insulated for warmth.

Accessories

Now you’ve got your layers sorted, you going to want to think about what accessories you need for spring sailing. Firstly, you’re not going to want to forget your sailing cap, as it will keep your head warm on the chillier mornings as well as shading the water glare when the sun starts to come out. When it comes to footwear, the Musto Dynamic Pro shoes are perfect for the spring when you're confident your feet will mostly stay dry but you need the performance of a sole designed for sailing.
