Surfing Accessories: The Essentials

One of the great things about surfing is that it’s such a simple sport – all you need is a board and a wetsuit, and you’re good to go just about anywhere. But at Wetsuit Outlet we’re always looking for ways to improve and to make things easier for you, so you’re able to get the best out of every session. We’ve compiled this list of our favourite surf accessories – all of the must-have’s you maybe hadn’t thought of, or didn’t know existed!

Towel poncho/changing robe

A towel poncho or changing robe is a great accessory for any watersports enthusiast, as it has so many great uses. Finally, you can keep a hold of your dignity while getting changed before or after your surf – those days of losing your towel to the wind while you hobble out of your wetsuit are over! A towel poncho is also great for wearing while you dry off and pack up your kit, and many of the towel ponchos and changing robes that we stock have large pockets for your phone, surf wax, snacks, or just keeping your hands warm. For colder days, check out the changing robes that have a waterproof and windproof outer shell, as these are great for wearing over your wetsuit if you’re having a bit of a break and watching from the shore. Essentially, it’s like taking your dressing gown to the beach and do you know anyone who wouldn’t want that?

Dry bag

Taking a soggy wetsuit home in your car is never ideal and whether you bundle it up in your towel or shove it in a carrier bag, that damp smell is going to leak out and it never really goes away. Treat yourself to a waterproof bag to wrap up your wetsuit and any other wet clothes after a surf, and keep it sealed away from those nice, clean, dry seats. Bonus benefit of a waterproof bag: you can inflate it and use it as a pillow on the beach – getting those 8 hours in is important if you want to perform at your best on the waves.

Wetsuit shampoo

You can deny it all you want but everyone’s guilty of having a wee in their wetsuit every now and again – it’s just practical. However, if you are partial to the occasional sea-wee, you should really consider giving your wetsuit a proper clean every now again, just as you would any other item of clothing (one would hope). A splash of wetsuit shampoo when you’re rinsing off your wetsuit after a surf will get rid of any musty smells and keep your suit fresh for the next time you want to get out there.

Surf wax

Surf wax is so important for surfing, as it gives you all th e grip you need to ride your board – without this, forget surfing! It’s really important though that you get the right wax for the temperature you’re surfing in, as it will give you the best performance. If you’re missing a base coat, a perfect substitute is to use Tropical Wax, but be sure to use the correct temperature wax on top. Our favourite is the Matunas Wax, because it’s so easy to apply and is fully eco-friendly (even the packet)! It also smells amazing. They make an awesome Base Coat as well as Cold, Cool and Tropical temperature surf wax available. Check out our top tips for using surf wax for more information.

So there you have it, the must-have surfing accessories for this summer. We know what you’re thinking: “Wouldn’t it be so much easier if this stuff just came with your wetsuit in the first place?” Well, yes, we thought that too. This is why we’ve put together loads of great package deals so you can buy your wetsuit with the extras you want, at an unbeatable price. What’s not to love?
