O'Neill Paddle Out

In order to celebrate the life of a man who contributed so much to the world of watersports, surfers from around the world gathered to pay their respects, creating a circle of love that transcended oceans. The paddle outs occured everywhere from Jack’s hometown in Santa Cruz, to Sydney and spanned all corners of the world, reaching Belgium, Canada, France, Japan, Netherlands, the UK and even South Africa.
Those who knew Jack well said a few words, sharing fond memories that they had of his life and adventures. Everyone from former O’Neill team riders Shaun Tomson and Tom Carroll to current riders Jordy Smith and Kevin Langeree had something to say about Jack, as well as O'Neill Sea Odyssey's Dan Haifley and several others who felt inspired by the man. The moving video footage saw thousands of surfers don their wetsuits and paddle out to sea on their boards.
On July 9th paddle outs took place in France, Holland, Belgium, Canada, Santa Cruz and on the UK’s original surfing spot, Great Western Beach in Newquay, while July 10th saw more in Australia and South Africa.
Recognisable for his trademark eye patch and impressive beard, Jack changed the face of surfing forever and it is thanks to him that people are able to stay in the water and wait to catch those waves. Read more about the ocean hero and his life’s work here.
