Man in a Midlayer

Winter's Warmest Midlayers

It’s the time of year when just a base layer and outer layer won’t cut it. When it’s cold, midlayers are just as important as your other layers. A midlayer creates warmth through trapped air and is your warmest layer. Look out for materials with good thermal properties and breathability that will keep you warm but won’t let you build up a sweat.

We caught up with our sailing buyer, Meg, to find out about her favourite midlayers.

Helly Hansen Men's Crew Midlayer Jacket

A global bestseller! This water-resistant, windproof and breathable jacket keeps you warm and dry and protected from the elements. With its wind resistant and water repellent microfiber fabric and PFC Free DWR this jacket will keep you protected from the elements. Gill Women’s Polar Fleece Jacket

We love this dense fleece jacket because it helps to provide warmth and comfort, whilst remaining light and breathable. It has a high neck and full front zip which helps to withstand wind and trap the heat and the new shape and finish, results in a much more stylish garment, perfect for wearing at any time.

Other features:

  • Front zip with internal storm guard
  • Handwarmer pockets with soft microfibre lining

Zhik Men’s Polartec Zip Fleece

The fine cut Polartec® fleece contains a tightly knit, durable microfleece that has been designed with recycled fabrics to hold its form even after extended use. The high pile surface provides great thermal insulation while importantly remaining breathable.

Other features:

  • Super soft Polartec® 100% recycled microfleece
  • 159 gsm fleece provides warmth without weight
  • High pile surface provides good insulation but remains highly breathable
  • Fine cut fleece has smooth finish, great as a mid-layer or stand-alone jacket

Gill Men’s Hydrophobe Down Jacket

Down is a fantastic natural insulator because it’s so light and lofty and traps air so effectively. Not so true if it gets wet. Gill have developed this sailing jacket with water-repellent down, so that when (rather than if) it gets wet, it continues to perform. The outer shell is windproof and water-repellent, and the 650 fill power down has a fantastic warmth to weight ratio, you’ll be surprised just how warm and light it is.

Other features:

  • Micro-baffle construction traps warmth and prevents down migration
  • Two hand warmer pockets and adjustable hem
  • Internal chest pocket
